Circuit-Bent Alesis HR-16 professionally modified Diabolical Devices

This modified Alesis HR-16 (version 1) features a custom designed Matrix Patching Grid from Diabolical Devices. A single LED patch pin connects bending points which will generate a wide variety of effects and glitches ranging from distorted, filtered and modulated effects to bizarre sounds and warped drum loops. The patch pins have LEDs that will react to ROM data and put on a light show. We have also incorporated a Master Pitch/Clock Rate Control with bypass switch and LED indicator. These are great machines and the HR-16 is loaded with original features. The modification unleashes the evil monster that has been hiding inside since the 80’s.

Circuit-Bent Alesis HR-16 by Diabolical Devices (version 2)
Version B of the Diabolical Modified Alesis HR-16 features a very simple circuit-bending interface and master Pitch/Clock modification. ROM bending is accomplished using 12 position rotary switch, position 1 is off, 2-12 are a variety off odd reactions from bit-reduction, modulation, filtered sounds, to holding and staccato effects. The Pitch Modification is the same as Version 1.

The Diabolical Modified Casio SK-1 (Version 3) is the new and improved circuit-bent glitch monster from Diabolical Devices. Create vast sound-sacapes, unique synth sounds and total chaos, all packed inside your favorite childhood toy. The Casio SK-1 is loaded with original features, sampling capabilities, and great sounds (for what it was….) all Diabolical modified SK-s include MIDI retrofit from Highly Liquid which allows you to trigger any of the SK-1’s notes via MIDI input, this is great for playing original sounds with larger keyboard or triggering glitched sounds from a machine or sequencer.

Diabolical Devices aka Class A Electronics, LLC is a leader in Professionally Modified Synthesizer and Audio Equipment, Expert Repair Services, and has a full line of Hand-Wired Tubes Amplifiers and Effects (Diabolical Amplification). Their work has been featured at NAMM, art galleries, music videos, countless tech blogs, and used by musicians all over the world, professionals and enthusiasts alike. The circuit-bending and synth mods are the work of head-technician James Gramling who has spent the last 12 years in professional audio service and electronics prototyping. Check out the new www.circuit-bent.com for updated specs, custom work questions, and new releases from Diabolical Devices

Diabolical Modified Casio SK-1 Features:

-20 point circuit-bending interface: Heavy-duty banana jacks on hand made turret board panels. This patch-bay allows you to scramble sound data as the synth addresses it, and the result is an endless variety of weird effects, noise, filtered and modulated bends, and one of a kind sounds (seriously, you might one hear some things once). It’s a mixed bag of playable bends and bends that play themselves. These patch locations will affect each preset sound differently and also affect samples and chord/auto-play functions. This patch-bay also allows you to cross-patch with other bent devices for more ROM scrambling goodness.

-Dual Square Wave Generator: A Diabolical Devices original. This mod allows you to patch the output of two different oscillators into circuit-bending patch locations. One oscillator is an LFO (low freq.), when patched to this point it will create controllable modulation, pulsing bends, and other strange reactions. The second stage is an Audio Frequency Oscillator which will react similarly to the LFO and create tunable overtones. Each Oscillator has an on/off switch with LED indicator, pitch/speed control, and a corresponding patch point.

-Skew Bank: This is a great mod adapted from Reed Ghazala’s original SK-1 bends, basically its a bank of 5 switches, when activated each switch will generate a different pulsing or semi-looping bend which affects original keyboard sounds.

-MIDI INPUT by Highly Liquid (www.highlyliquid.com)

-1/4″ Audio Output

-Blue Power LED

Comes carefully packed with patch cables and basic instructions to get you started, and a repair warranty. Basically if it should fail in the future, just send it back, the unit will be repaired and returned to you no charge (excludes physical damage, mechanical components, misuse, and other unreasonable situations). Check out the videos below, they feature the photo-controled oscillator #2 but everything else is the same. New videos coming soon.

Diabolical Modified Roland TR-606 analog drum machine:

The Roland TR-606 is classic analog drum machine, it sounds wonderful but has limited control over bass drum and snare drum parameters. These particular modifications focus on these two drum sounds. The Bass Drum now features PITCH, DECAY, and ENV amount controls along with ENV warp switch. There is a fine tune adjustment on the side to calibrate the decay of the bass drum with each ENV type and and LED for ENV status. The Snare Drum additions include PITCH, DECAY, and HP-Filter. In addition to Bass and Snare mods individual 1/8″ outputs have been added for each drum sound. When an output is used the corresponding drum sound is removed from the main mix.

Diabolical Modified Roland TR-606 features:
Bass Drum Mods
-Pitch
-Decay
-Envelope adjust
-ENV selector switch and LED

Snare Drum
-Pitch
-Decay
-High Pass Filter

Individual Outputs

Blue LED color change

Completely Refurbished: We completely service and maintain all 606’s we modify. All the tact switches (buttons) have been replaced. Interface jacks including Audio out, DIN SYNC, and trigger outs have been cleaned and resoldered. All potentiometers and rotary switches have been cleaned and replaced if necessary. DC power input and battery terminals are inspected and replaced if necessary. Internally and externally cleaned and inspected.

Here are a couple of cool videos from Big City Music featuring the Diabolical Modified tr-606 with other items. I will post a demo of just the 606 shortly. FYI: BCM has a couple of our 606’s IN STOCK as of 5/1/10 very limited runs of these so act fast.

Diabolical Devices offers lots of modification and repair/refurbishment services to the Roland Juno-106. Juno-106s are praised for their sound, but equally hated for the technical problems that have made them generally unreliable. Diabolical Devices/Class A Electronics offers a solution.

Juno-106 Analog/Module board refurbishment: All of the plagued 80017 vcf/vca modules are extracted and treated to remove the epoxy cover Roland used keep others from copying their design. Over time this cover causes heat and moisture issues which attribute to a variety of voice related problems. Once treated and thoroughly cleaned the modules are reinstalled and calibrated back to factory specs. This not only solves %99 of failing voice chips it protects the remaining one from premature failure. After treatment and calibration any modules that are still exhibiting problems will be replaced with working ones and will be included with no additional charge. This Service is $200.00 plus return shipping as of 5/1/10. Contact us for details.

Juno-106 Panel/Fader board refurbishment: Over time the tact switches under the buttons tend to wear out. If you have buttons that don’t work or work intermittently replacing the switches will solve this issue and prevent future failure. We will also replace any broken faders with refurbished or new faders (up to 6 are included any additional faders will be $4.00 each). We will clean and treat all remaining faders, and clean and inspect remaining panel board components. Also includes OPTIONAL BLUE display and LED color change. This service is $125.00 plus return shipping as of 5/1/10. Please contact us for details.
VCF Modifications: Diabolical Devices has developed an interesting set of modifications for the Roland Juno-106 designed to expand the internal sounds and process external audio sources through any of the 6 independent VCF’s. A Filter Cutoff and Resonance control is added for each voice the original cutoff and reso faders act as a master control for these parameters. In addition an 1/8″ audio input and audio output are added for each voice. This allows you to process 6 different audio sources with separate cutoff and resonance controls, the LFO, ENV and KYBD CV modulate all 6 at the same time. If you use just the input to a voice the DCO is removed and the audio is routed through VCF into VCA and Chorus, mixed with other voices and then comes out main audio output. If input and output are used the audio routes through VCF only, this voice is then removed from main output. Package INCLUDES both of the above services plus VCF modifications. This service is $595.00 plus return shipping. Please contact us for details.

Photos and video demo coming soon!!
